I am so excited to say that I officially completed my second 5K race!¬† Let’s go back to Saturday, May 7, 2016,¬†which was a beautiful day.¬†¬†For me it started at 7:30am when I woke up early to the sound of my alarm.¬† For anyone who knows me, setting my alarm and getting up early on a Saturday is NOT my normal routine.¬† However, earlier this year I chose to commit to rising early for at least¬†six Saturdays¬†in 2016¬†upon joining the ELGA Wellness Club.¬† The ELGA¬†Wellness Club participates in several community races throughout the year, proudly representing ELGA Credit Union and promoting our staff health and fitness.¬†

This particular race that got me up extra early was for the celebration of Cinco De Mayo.  The race started at the Swartz Creek Golf Course.  Sombreros were handed out to the first 300 participants, and they even offered us festive breakfast tacos afterwards as a reward for completing the race.  I learned that a portion of the race course is included in the CRIM Festival of Races, and for many it was a great opportunity to get in an early season training run while enjoying the Cinco de Mayo festivities!

During the 5K I was able to walk a little bit with¬†two¬†ladies from my branch, my sister in-law, and several other amazing ELGA associates.¬† It was a great time and made the 55 minutes it took me to complete my 5K¬†fly by!¬†¬† As each of us crossed the finish line¬†our names¬†were announced.¬† I gleamed with pride as many of our ELGA associates cheered¬†me and¬†each other on during the race, and as¬†we crossed the finish line.¬† Having this type of team spirit really helps¬† those of us that aren‚Äôt official ‚Äúrunners‚ÄĚ stay excited, engaged, and enthusiastic to complete just one more race and look forward to the next one.

Participating in the Cinco De Mayo 5k¬† was such a fun and amazing way to stay in shape, (perhaps minus the tacos,) and spend time with my¬†fellow ELGA teammates!¬† We are so lucky in the fact that ELGA is different¬†from many traditional organizations in that we are a¬†FAMILY who truly¬†enjoys spending time with each other outside of normal work¬†hours.¬†¬†We fully embrace and¬†live¬†ELGA’s¬†mission statement¬†of “Building Lifelong Relationships,” and I’ve seen firsthand through our ELGA Wellness¬†Club how a race is a great way to bond and build those relationships.¬† I highly encourage anyone to grab some co-workers,¬†friends, and family,¬†and join us for the next 5k race! ¬†
