If you are currently in¬†high school or college¬†and plan to be off during the summer months, now is a great time to start thinking about a¬†summer job.¬† Students who apply early and get their foot in the door for those prime summer positions are most likely to get those coveted jobs than the late-comers.¬† Many companies limit how many temporary employees they hire during the summer season so the positions fill up very quickly.¬† Dont’ be afraid to get started now!

Here are a few things to keep in mind when applying for a job:

  • If you submit a resume, make sure it is up to par (spell checking, formatting, etc.)¬†and includes everything the employer requests.
  • Wear something nice to the interview.¬† Weather you’re applying at an attorney’s office or McDonald’s, make sure you look presentable.¬† This will be the first impression you make on your potential employer so make it a good one!¬† When it doubt, dress up not down.
  • Use proper English when communicating with your interviewer or future employer both¬†in speech¬†and in writing.¬† Double negatives, the word ain’t, and¬†your favorite¬†slang words should be saved for another time.
  • Smile, offer a handshake, and introduce yourself.¬† This is a great way to make a powerful first impression.¬† It exudes confidence and makes you seem personable, which just about every employer is looking for!

No matter what job you land, be sure to show up and do your best every day.¬† People with¬†a great¬†work ethic do not go unnoticed and chances are you’ll get a raise or a promotion in no time.¬† At the end of the summer, your employer should be sad to see you go, not relieved.¬† Good luck and may you find the perfect summer job!

Hi, I'm Malori, one of your Vibe Ninjas. I graduated from the University of Michigan - Flint in 2008 with a B.A. in Organizational Communication and a minor in Espa√Īol. I applied at ELGA during a job fair at U of M and started full time immediately after graduation. To top that all off, in April of 2011 I married Brian, the love of my life. So, now that you know a little bit about where I'm coming from, maybe you can relate a little better. I hope the advice, ramblings, life experiences, and occasional lame jokes in my posts will benefit you in some way. We're all in this journey together. I'd love to hear your story and your comments!
