Students who apply early and get their foot in the door for those prime summer positions are most likely to get those coveted jobs than the late-comers. Many companies limit how many temporary employees they hire during the summer season so the positions fill up very quickly. Dont’ be afraid to get started now! Here are a few things to keep in mind when applying for a job: If you submit a resume, make sure it is up to par (spell checking, formatting, etc.) and includes everything the employer requests. Wear something nice to the interview. Weather you’re applying at an attorney’s office or McDonald’s, make sure you look presentable. This will be the first impression you make on your potential employer so make it a good one! When it doubt, dress up not down. Use proper English when communicating with your interviewer or future employer both in speech and in writing. Double negatives, the word ain’t, and your favorite slang words should be saved for another time. Smile, offer a handshake, and introduce yourself. This is a great way to make a powerful first impression. It exudes confidence and makes you seem personable, which just about every employer is looking for! No matter what job you land, be sure to show up and do your best every day. People with a great work ethic do not go unnoticed and chances are you’ll get a raise or a promotion in no time. At the end of the summer, your employer should be sad to see you go, not relieved. Good luck and may you find the perfect summer job!
