On Saturday, May 18th, the ELGA Wellness Team and hundreds of local runners and walkers gathered at Faith Tabernacle Church in Burton for Race2Grace. Faith Tabernacle was decorated with a festive balloon arch and there were excited vendors, volunteers, and onlookers gathered in the lobby as racers got checked in and pinned on their bibs, moving outside around 8:45am. The sun was shining through the rain clouds as racers began to gather near the starting line.

This race holds a special place in my heart as I attended Faithway Christian Academy from Pre-K through 5th grade and also attended church at Faith Tabernacle. The race raises money for the school and its programs, which provide a loving and faith-based experience for youngsters receiving their elementary education. The race course passes through Kelly Lake Park, in front of which my grandparents lived since long before it was an official park. It’s such a lovely space and I am so happy to see it being maintained and upgraded with a pavilion, docks, and paved walking trails for all to enjoy.

Meals, Medals and More

I was told by those who ran this race before that it had a great post-race meal at the end, and they were not exaggerating! Tired racers were greeted inside the church with a delicious spread of hot dogs, pasta salad, pizza, and breadsticks. Some healthier options included fresh fruit, salad, and cheese sticks as well. There was even a Gluten Free section for those with special dietary needs – a very thoughtful touch.

Next up was the announcement of those who placed in their age groups. The ELGA Wellness Team cleaned up with a total of fourteen medals earned for their hard work. Several members of the team placed first in their age groups! The morning culminated with a prize giveaway, and those who had stuck around listened intently for a familiar name to be called. The prizes were gift certificates for local establishments such as restaurants, movie tickets, and bowling.

This event is the second in the Burton Race Series.  The Burton Race Series has four events, and those that complete three out of the four events will receive a customized Burton Race Series medal! The Series is sponsored by Hurley and is meant to encourage a year-round healthy lifestyle and to encourage those in all walks of life to participate in community events and fundraisers. The first race in the Burton Race Series was the Hot Fudge Run and Walk, which you can read about here.
