On Saturday, August 3rd, ELGA associates attended the 5th annual Flint River Flotilla. The Flint River Flotilla was hosted by the Corridor Alliance Chapter of the Flint River Watershed Coalition. They are a community-based group of government, non-profit, and private sector stakeholders organized to initiate, support, and sustain projects in the Flint River Corridor that revitalize the river as a community asset while enriching the quality of life for the area’s residents, businesses, and visitors.

Everyone who attended the event got to see some beautiful sights of Flint that may go unnoticed by most residents. We got to float down the Flint River starting at Tenacity Brewing and heading down to Mott Park Recreational area. There was definitely not a right or wrong way to float down the river. I saw some multi-man floats like a giant flamingo, people in inner tubes, kayaks, and even a few people on a large hand-crafted raft that had a grill on it!

I am especially interested in this event because Flint has gotten a pretty bad rap for a while now. Flint is my home town it’s very near and dear to my heart. Over the years a lot of good projects have been accomplished to clean up our city, including some river clean-ups and construction to make things better and more accessible to people in our community. This event really highlights the beauty that our city has to offer along with a small look as to what can still be done to make it even more beautiful. The proceeds of this event go to help with the efforts to clean up the Flint River.

Fun for Everyone

I think every associate who participated really enjoyed themselves; here are some quotes from them:

“I’ve used Kayak Flint before to take trips down the river from Tenacity, and it’s always so much fun. It’s so awesome that the Flint River Watershed Coalition is bringing people together to enjoy this awesome natural resource right in our own backyard. It was so cool to see hundreds of people gathered to float down the river together. I can’t wait for next year!” – Mariah Gorman

“While getting ready to take off for the Flotilla it made me really happy to see so many people getting together in the community. I had a blast on the way down and will definitely be back again next year!” – Amanda Edwards

“This is my new favorite event in Flint! My favorite part was seeing the hundreds of people turn out to enjoy their day on the Flint River. I even forgot my oars and Kayak Flint let me borrow some! It was a very fun day to relax and float with my friends and coworkers. I can’t wait for next year!” – Megan LaVasseur
