Well, it’s finally happened. The weather has hit single digits and by the time I come in from getting the mail I can’t feel my fingers. Although, this could mean one of two things: either it is too cold outside, or it’s time for me to invest in some better gloves! When it gets cold like this, I find that the one thing that really warms me up from the inside out is a nice mug of hot chocolate. There is just something about it that makes winter better. Not to mention that the warm mug helps to warm up my fingers. So, while you are putting up your holiday decorations or writing out your holiday cards, enjoy a nice hot mug of cocoa. Let it warm you up from the inside out and put you in the holiday spirit. So from my kitchen to yours; make, eat, and enjoy!

Elyse Hot Chocolate

“Fancy Hot Chocolate”

1 package hot chocolate mix (any flavor that makes you happy)

1 bag of tiny marshmallows

1 can of whipped cream

1 bar of chocolate (dark, milk, or white all work)

1 candy cane (optional)

¼ cup raspberries (optional)

Prepare your hot chocolate mix as you normally would. Leave enough room at the top of your mug to add all of your toppings.  Add as many marshmallows as you see fit. Spray the whipped cream over the top of the marshmallows. This will help to create a barrier so the whipped cream lasts longer. You are now going to take your bar of chocolate and shave it on top so it looks like chocolate snow on your whipped cream (I use my zester for this task). If you do not have a zester, the next best thing is to hit the bar with a mallet until you get really tiny pieces that you can sprinkle on top.

At this point you can be done, or you can get even more creative with your hot chocolate!

-For Christmas morning instead of using the chocolate I will smash up a candy cane and sprinkle it on top.

-For a more adult feel, I will add raspberries in the hot chocolate before I add the marshmallows. The raspberries will soak up a lot of the flavor. They will taste like chocolate, or if you decide to add an adult beverage to the mix, they will soak up that as well!
