What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day weekend than running for FUDGE? Chocolate was on everyone’s mind on Saturday, February 16th at the 7th Annual Burton Kiwanis Hot Fudge 5K Run & Walk. It was a brisk 25 degree as over a hundred runners and walkers met at Bentley Middle School in Burton to get their bibs on and head towards the starting line. The event was the first event in the Burton Race series, a series of four races in the City of Burton that raise money for various causes.

A Sweet Cause

The Kiwanis Club of Burton is dedicated to raising money for children in the community, and proceeds from the Hot Fudge 5K are going to be used for scholarships and grants to assist local students in need. It was appropriate, then, that the setting was at a local middle school/high school campus. There was a warming center and check-in in the middle school auditorium, where dozens of racers gathered with their family and friends to stretch and look forward to the sweet treats to come.

The course took participants down Belsay Road and through the neighborhood behind the Davison Roadside Park. Children could be seen sledding and many drivers passing by surely thought that all of us running and walking were crazy for bearing the frigid temps for 3.1 miles. But all were in good spirits, with local volunteers and residents along the course cheering us on and encouraging everyone to keep going.

Sweet Endings

At the end of the race, a photographer was snapping shots of all racers as they crossed the finish line, and then it was back into the auditorium for the post-race celebration. Biggby Coffee of Burton was waiting with fresh coffee and hot chocolate to warm up chilled racers. There were trays full of fresh fruit, marshmallows, graham crackers, and bananas to dip into fresh, hot fudge. Some savory options were also available, such as chili and pulled pork sandwiches.

The Burton Kiwanis did a great job putting this event on and the ELGA Wellness Team have a great time participating every year. Winter races are not for everyone, but they are fun in their own way! We are looking forward to participating in the Hot Fudge Run for many years to come.
