On Friday February 22nd, 22 teams from ELGA Credit Union participated in the annual Gary Haggart Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake! The event celebrated its 40th year this year, and was hosted by Galaxy Bowling Lanes in Grand Blanc.    ELGA is blessed to consistently have an incredible level of associate participation, as well as the support of many members and corporate partners.   With great passion and support, ELGA is pleased to have raised over $10,000 for this event this year!

Helping Kids Overcome

My first experience with the Big Brothers Big Sisters programs was many years ago as a Lunch Buddy at International Academy of Flint.   Over the years there have been other ELGA associates in the Lunch Buddy program with me, and we have been excited to participate in programs at several different schools. In one of our programs at a local middle school, I was matched with a sweet young lady with unbelievable tenacity and strength.   The challenges this sweet girl encountered in her young life were incomprehensible to me as an adult,  yet I saw her continue to move forward and maintain focus on her goals.  Despite what I considered overwhelming challenges, she went on to graduate high school and go on to college.

Over the years, I watched as she was blessed to have several people enter her life who encouraged her when needed, provided necessary support and resources she may not have been able to obtain on her own, and essentially believed in her when she sometimes did not believe in herself.  I saw firsthand how mentors played such a critical role in the direction her life took, as opposed to the direction her circumstances may have sent her.   It has been experiences and observations like these that have given me great belief in what the Big Brothers Big Sisters programs bring to the youth of our communities.

30 Years Strong

I am blessed to work for ELGA Credit Union, which has been participating in Bowl for Kids Sake with Big Brothers Big Sisters for 30+ years.  This is the largest annual fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters, and supports the organization in its mission of defending the potential of Flint and Genesee County youth by facilitating strong mentoring relationships.  We love the event and the cause – and we are already looking forward to next year!
