The American Red Cross came to ELGA Credit Union last week to host our August blood drive.  The Red Cross was looking to stock up for the upcoming hurricane in Florida and surrounding states and the Labor Day holiday weekend.  Members of the community and ELGA Credit Union employees donated their time to stop in and give blood. We had 47 people signed up in advance as well as a few walk-ins. The blood drive collection totaled 40 units of blood that will help people who are in need.

The only way for the blood bank to keep up with natural disasters and supply the hospitals is through blood drives. The American Red Cross has many donation sites and many local places will host a blood drive.  For me, knowing that I am potentially the reason someone is still alive today is what keeps me donating and interested in organizing blood drives.  To see the members of the community seek out a donation location and take time out of their day to come in and donate speaks volumes.  Americans live busy lives and we often get caught up in our day-to-day routine.  We may not always think of ways that we can help people in need or we think it is too big of a task.

Save a Life, One Pint At A Time

Giving blood is only about an hour out of your day and can go farther than you ever thought.  One unit of blood could potentially help three people in need.  So, the 40 units collected on August 30th could help save 120 people.  One person in a car accident could need up to 100 pints of blood and every two seconds someone is in need of blood. Your blood could potentially save the life of someone you know! Please think about taking just an hour out of your day once every eight weeks to help save a life.  Also, did you know that if you schedule your donation through the Red Cross Blood donation app on your phone, you can follow your donation and see where it was used? How incredible!

A HUGE thank you to the members of the community and the employees at ELGA Credit Union for making this blood drive a success!
