On Good Friday, March 30, 2018, ELGA Credit Union and members of the community joined together with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive to help those in need.

Just one pint of donated blood can help save as many as three people’s lives, and according to the American Red Cross website, the need for blood donations is always prevalent:

  • Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.
  • 4.5 Million Americans would die each year without lifesaving blood transfusions.
  • Approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U.S.
  • Nearly 7,000 units of platelets and 10,000 units of plasma are needed daily in the U.S.
  • Nearly 21 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S.
  • The average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 pints.
  • The blood type most often requested by hospitals is type O.

At ELGA’s spring blood drive 54 ELGA people showed up to donate.   Starting at 10 am in the ELGA Administration community room a steady flow of people began to filter in an out.  Some were nervous, and some happily danced along to the music playing in the background, but everyone was ready to donate and help save lives.

The American Red Cross was able to receive 42 successful donations. To ensure the safety of blood donation for both donors and recipients, all volunteer blood donors are evaluated to determine their eligibility to give blood.  Each donor receives a brief examination during which temperature, pulse, blood pressure and hemoglobin (or hematocrit) are measured.  It’s like a free mini health check-up!  That said, if you’re feeling a little under the weather, it is best to reschedule your blood donation for a later date.

After donating not only did everyone feel great about giving back to our community, but the juice and cookies are always an appreciated reward.  We also look forward to hosting more blood drives at ELGA in the future to help those in need and help keep our community healthy.
