It was a beautiful, but chilly, 25 degree day on Lake Fenton this past Saturday, February 3rd.  Fifteen ELGA Wellness Team associates came out to participate in the 50th Annual Fenton Polar Plunge!  For those that don’t know what this entails,  a Polar Plunge is where you jump, willingly, into an opening cut out in a frozen lake.  Though this might sound crazy to the average person, many people across Michigan come out  to do it for a truly amazing cause.

Upon showing up, our ELGA Wellness Team¬†was greeted by a multitude of law enforcement officials that were very excited¬†to have us¬†there. They led us to a common room where we waited for our turn to be called to take the plunge. We were surrounded by lots of amazing people that also committed to take the plunge, and you could feel the excitement and nerves in the room. Our team raised $965.00 toward this amazing cause, and all of us were very excited to be a part of it.¬† As they called our name¬†saying, ¬†‚ÄúCome on down ELGA‚Äôs Wellness Team,‚ÄĚ our entire group began to cheer.¬† We were pumped and ready to go.¬† We followed the line all the way down to the ice to where we were surrounded by spectators.¬† Many people have asked if it was cold, and to be honest, my adrenaline was so high I¬†hardly felt the¬†cold at all.¬† I took the hand of the police officer¬†who¬†led me to the large hole in the ice where three dive team members were waiting for me in the water.¬†¬†After joining¬†hands with some of my teammates, the officer counted to¬†three and¬†said, ‚ÄúJump!‚ÄĚ We all jumped!¬† The water was cold, but invigorating!¬† I would recommend that everyone do this at least once in their life.¬† Not just because it is¬†for a¬†great cause, but also because it¬†does feel so¬†revitalizing.

All funds raised from this event go towards year round sports training and athletic competition for more than 23,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities in Michigan, namely the Special Olympics of Michigan.  There are 28 Michigan Law Enforcement run Polar Plunges that take place from January through March of this year.  To date the Fenton Polar Plunge event has raised $82,296.00, but they are not done yet.

I am SO very proud of our ELGA Wellness Team associates who came out to support the Special Olympics. There are also no words to express how thankful I am for them in helping me cross this off my bucket list.  I adore each of them, and because of them, today was even more special.
