ELGA Credit Union was proud to be part of The Making Strides against Breast Cancer event held on Saturday October 14th in downtown Flint. The main host of the event was the American Cancer Society who brought the entire community together for a 5K walk to represent the survivors, support those currently fighting, and also as an opportunity to remember those who have been taken from this disease. The purpose of the walk is to raise awareness and funds to save lives from the battle people face from breast cancer. The money raised is used to fund research, to provide free information, support to help people reduce their risk for breast cancer, and early detection.

It never seems to amaze me at the efforts and dedication our ELGA associates put towards community events. We were a little late in the decision to be part of the event, simply because we didn’t have much knowledge about it until Erica D., my co-champion, mentioned how our passion could really shine throughout this experience. I couldn’t have agreed with her more, but I knew that this event was going to have emotional challenges for me personally because of the impact breast cancer has had on my life. However, this was the perfect time to show support to those who really need it. Whether it was waking up at 3:30am to be part of the kickoff to Breast Cancer Awareness month with ABC12, the endless fundraising efforts that have taken place in our local branches, or showing up for the main event; we truly have an organization that amplifies serving our community and helping people.

Although it rained all morning throughout the entire walk, all of those in attendance agreed that cancer never sleeps, and even when it rains there are so many people who are fighting for their lives. To see the sea of pink walking the streets of Flint was very touching and shows a sense of hope and faith for those who are impacted by breast cancer. We are so proud to be part of something way bigger than ourselves and to show our support and compassion for our community.

We continued fundraising efforts throughout the month of October. On November 1st ELGA Credit Union presented The American Cancer Society with a check for $10,000.00! As Breast Cancer Awareness month comes to an end, we know the fight continues for so many. We look forward to sponsoring this event in the years to come and are proud to be part of this great cause.
