Another weekend, and another race for the ELGA Wellness Team.  The race was held on Sunday, August 20th, 2017 in Lapeer at Rowden Park.  This race that we participated in was the 4th Annual Run Drugs Out of Town 5K Run & Walk. It was a beautiful morning for a nice run or walk.  The sun was shining and ELGA was there to represent.

Families Against Narcotics (F.A.N.) was born in 2007 when two teen heroin overdoses happened in the small town of Fraser, Michigan.  That community alone had dealt with thirty overdoses just that year alone.  This is just a small glimpse into the epidemic that is happening all across out wonderful nation in communities big and small. Many small communities have F.A.N. chapters and host a Run Drugs Out of Town 5K Run & Walk as annual fundraiser and to raise awareness.

Before each race that is held for this event organizers speak to the effects of drug use, remember those who have lost their battle, and encourage those who are continuing to fight.  Everyone is also handed a balloon.  Three different colors are handed out and each color represents the different stages of addiction. The orange balloon is for those who have lost their fight against addiction, green is for those who are still fighting, and the blue balloon is for those they are helping get into and thru recovery.  This is a great cause and I am so glad I was able to be a part of it with my ELGA family and friends I have known for years.

Thank you to all of the wonderful ELGA Wellness members, and community members, who came out super early on a Sunday morning to support such a wonderful cause in the lovely town of Lapeer.  ELGA was also honored to bring home the 2017 Team Award for their involvement and team participation in the race year after year.  We hope you will join us next year, or reach out to this great organization if you or someone you know is suffering from addiction.
