Flushing Harvest Fest

Flushing Harvest Fest

This past Saturday was the Flushing Harvest Festival, an event put on by the Flushing Chamber of Commerce every year in celebration of the Autumn season. This year they moved the date of the event up a few weeks in hopes of avoiding possibly chilly weather. However, boy-oh-boy did we get anything but chilly weather this past Saturday, September 23rd! With the forecast calling for a high of 90 degrees, we all put aside our sweaters and boots for shorts and sandals to brave the heat. In the end it was well worth it because it was a beautiful day in downtown Flushing.

The streets were lined with vendor booths and scarecrows, which truly gave the whole event a cozy small-town feeling. The many vendors were out with their pop-up tents, hiding from the sun, and engaging with our community. The crowds were not discouraged by the weather either as there was an awesome turn out, which made for a busy, fun-filled day! Myself and my fellow ELGA associates were the hosts of a Balloon Popping Extravaganza, and handed out prizes and candy to all of the participants. The kids had a blast, and so did we!

The festival held an array of contests, from a dog costume contest to a scarecrow contest, in which we participated! The building of the scarecrow was almost as fun as getting to see our members excitement when they saw our ELGA scarecrow with its bright purple ELGA shirt on and matching sunglasses.

It’s extremely rewarding to be out in the community we serve, talking to our members and meeting new people as well. It was great to hear firsthand the excitement buzzing around about our new ELGA state-of-the-art branch here in Flushing. Our members shared with us their favorite aspects, from the Teller Machines to the beautiful pictures of the familiar faces inside. It was very encouraging to hear how the community has embraced the changes along with us. I would say that this year’s Flushing Harvest Fest was a big success, and it is an awesome way to welcome in the Fall season. Now I only have one question
where IS that Fall weather?
